My mom is a poet, crafter, writer, and illustrator and read me poems ( aa milne being a huge one) from the minute I was born. A Childs Garden of Verses is more fantastic poetry that is delightfully accessible.(aghines.com is her site)
When I was older I think I most loved Charles Bukowski and ee cummings because umm..
Bukowski is rough and salty and the way ee writes is kinda hot.
As far as poetry being a chore.. I read it and I write it and sometimes it moves me, and when it doesn't, I move on.
Best poetry I have been into lately are the lyrics of the Shins. They make my knees weak.
ps thank for stopping by my blog.. I will be visiting yours often!
